Growing Flowers as a Floral Designer

The Unwalled Garden was created to celebrate British flowers and floral design.

I had noticed that British flowers were growing in popularity across the UK but there was a gap between the large-scale high impact designs you would see online and the buckets of flowers being sold at farmers markets. I wanted to challenge this gap and close it by creating impactful, design-led unique floral arrangements and installations that put British Flowers and sustainability at the heart of each design.

I chose to go one step further and grow the flowers myself that I use for designs, partly because I love working outside and didn’t want to be tied to a desk every day, but also because it meant I could nurture each creation from seed to bloom and grow the flowers that I can’t buy elsewhere. The flowers I grow are full of movement, and this is what truly sets British flowers apart from imported flowers. You cannot replicate the abundance that using these stems creates and the impact they can have on floral design at a wedding or party. By sourcing the flowers direct from my own garden, I can ensure that we plant exactly what we need to create the most luxurious, design-led service where we can create our clients’ wildest dreams straight from the garden.

I often get told that you can’t be both a florist and a flower grower but I treat them as a combined craft which celebrates and inspires each other, giving me the creative tools to design one-off creations full of colour, texture and scent.
